This text presents the basic and clinical foundations of anesthesiology. It is easy to read and is comprehensive without being lengthy. Readers can test their knowledge with the “Clinical Review” questions at the end of chapters and will appreciate the abundance of color illustrations, clinical images, and practical tables. Chapters are highly organized and make liberal use of bulleted text where appropriate. Everything needed in a single source is here, from clinically important basic science to the full range of anesthetic practice: pain management and regional anesthesia, including ultrasound-guided peripheral nerve blocks; specialty anesthesia; preoperative evaluation and intraoperative management; ambulatory and non-operating room anesthesia; and critical care. The book also includes topical chapters on the obese patient, infectious diseases, alternative medicine, substance abuse, cosmetic surgery, robotic surgery, the hazards of working in the operating room, and residency requirements and guidelines.
Drain's Perianesthesia Nursing: A Critical Care Approach, 6th Edition is the most comprehensive book on the market specifically tailored to perianesthesia nurses. The book features five distinct sections – the PACU, anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, nursing care, and special considerations. Nursing and pharmacologic interventions are integrated with in-depth coverage of pathophysiology. This edition expands coverage of evidence based research and adds a new chapter on care of the obese patient undergoing bariatric surgery. Written by Jan Odom-Forren, an expert in the anesthesia and post-operative fields, Drain's Perianesthesia Nursing is also an excellent study tool for ASPAN certification. Five separate sections provide coverage including the PACU, anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, nursing care, and special considerations. An overview of essential PACU concepts section covers issues such as patient safety, evidence-based research, and legal/ethical considerations Anatomy and physiology chapters cover physiologic considerations for each body system Pharmacology chapters cover basic principles as well as types of anesthetic agents such as intravenous anesthetics and regional anesthesia, including the physiology of action and the appropriate nursing interventions to prepare you for common situations in the PACU. Nursing care chapters cover assessment, patient education, complications, pain management, and care of specialty-surgery patients. A section on special considerations covers the care of patients of different ages and those with conditions such as malignant hyperthermia, substance abuse, and cardiac arrest. Coverage of current policies and issues affecting perianesthesia nursing practice includes patient safety, infection control, managed care implications, pain management, and bioterrorism. Nursing and pharmacologic interventions are integrated with in-depth coverage of pathophysiology for a comprehensive look at disease and treatment. NEW Evidence Based Research boxes are added to all the chapters in Section IV and Section V. NEW! Care of the Obese Patient Undergoing Bariatric Surgery chapter discusses the challenges that weight-loss surgery presents to the patient and perianesthesia nurse. Streamlined format includes an overview, chapter summary, and references for each chapter. More than 275 illustrations show key concepts and principles of care. Updated The Changing Health Care System and Its Implications for the PACU chapter includes content on healthcare reform. Revised Patient Safety and Legal Issues in the PACU chapter includes content on patient safety. Expanded Evidence-based Practice and Research and Bioterrorism and Its Impact on the PACU chapters include coverage of new developments and practices.
Learn how to successfully work with patients in pain with The Core Curriculum for Pain Management Nursing, 3rd Edition. PREFACE Since 9/11 the veterinary care of Military Working Dogs (MWDs) has assumed a greater importance. The role of the working dog has never been more visible and more appreciated. At this writing there are a large number of MWDs deployed throughout the world in support of the Global War on Terrorism. Many people both in and out of uniform are coming to realize that MWDs are among the most valuable and cost-effective counterterrorism tools we have. Before 9/11 detector dogs and their skills were largely taken for granted, even downplayed. Comments like: “MWDs are low-tech”; and “Dogs will be replaced by sensors, imaging techniques and computers” were not uncommon. Detector dogs have become a very visible front-line protective measure against bomb threats – check out the headlines on suicide bombers to see what our terrorist enemies are up to. Then check out the film clips that show security forces in action – the dogs are everywhere! These are reminders that no other tool in the arsenal can match the efficiency, mobility, adaptability and field readiness of a working dog. So, what’s new – why publish a new edition now? Yes 9/11 did change things – this edition now has guidelines for MWDs exposed to Anthrax. This third edition of the Handbook also contains new information about the prophylactic laparoscopic-assisted gastropexy program that aims to protect our most “at-risk” dogs from GDV. We also provide guidelines on transitioning from once daily feeding to feeding two “meals” a day; the Dog Center now feeds over 500 MWDs twice a day. Additionally we have updated information about MWD Adoption – a program that has come of age in the 2 years since the publication of the second edition. Also in an effort to provide a “one-stop” resource for working dog policy, this edition now incorporates topics that were formerly available only as VETCOM policy letters. These and other revisions make this new MWD Handbook one of the most up to date resources for military veterinarians caring for MWD’s and other Federal Agency working dogs. All veterinary personnel involved in anesthesia should familiarize themselves with these standards, as some previously used agents (such as butorphanol / acepromazine / glycopyrrolate combination, tiletamine / zolazepam, and xylazine) have been removed from the guidance The world will continue to change and our veterinary care will also change as our knowledge, new technology, and improved therapeutics become available. Our commitment to the health care of MWDs is a constant. Keep up the good work!
