#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Bringing together a cast of fascinating characters in a riveting tale of ambition and corruption, politics, passion, and ultimate justice, Dangerous Games is a thrilling drama from Danielle Steel. Television correspondent Alix Phillips dodges bullets and breaks rules to bring the most important news to the world—from riots in America to protests on the streets of Tehran. With her daughter in college, and working alongside cameraman Ben Chapman, a deeply private ex–Navy SEAL, Alix revels in the risks and whirlwind pace of her work. But her latest assignment puts her at the center of an explosive story that will reshape many lives, including her own: investigating damning allegations involving the Vice President of the United States, Tony Clark. Alix begins with a nationally revered woman who may be the key to exposing frightening secrets. Olympia Foster is the fragile, reclusive widow of America’s most admired senator, who had been destined for the presidency before an assassin’s bullet felled him. Since then, Olympia has found emotional support in Clark, who once wanted her as his wife and now stands as her protector and confidant. When Alix digs deeper, federal agents pick up the trail. Then the threats start. As the stakes rise in this dangerous game, Alix needs Ben’s help as never before. And soon they realize they are grappling with an adversary far more sinister than they had imagined.

The 1980s saw the peak of a moral panic over fantasy role-playing games such as Dungeons and Dragons. A coalition of moral entrepreneurs that included representatives from the Christian Right, the field of psychology, and law enforcement claimed that these games were not only psychologically dangerous but an occult religion masquerading as a game. Dangerous Games explores both the history and the sociological significance of this panic. Fantasy role-playing games do share several functions in common with religion. However, religion—as a socially constructed world of shared meaning—can also be compared to a fantasy role-playing game. In fact, the claims of the moral entrepreneurs, in which they presented themselves as heroes battling a dark conspiracy, often resembled the very games of imagination they condemned as evil. By attacking the imagination, they preserved the taken-for-granted status of their own socially constructed reality. Interpreted in this way, the panic over fantasy-role playing games yields new insights about how humans play and together construct and maintain meaningful worlds. Laycock’s clear and accessible writing ensures that Dangerous Games will be required reading for those with an interest in religion, popular culture, and social behavior, both in the classroom and beyond.

“This psychologically complex thriller features a serial killer who’s all the more terrifying because of his basic ordinariness; he’s Everyman, twisted.” —Publishers Weekly Maverick FBI special agent Tess McCallum (nicknamed “Super Fed” by an adoring media, the central investigator in previous novel Next Victim) is back, and she has got a new partner—one she does not want and does not trust. She is chasing a vicious kidnapper known as the “Rain Man,” who leaves his victims chained up in a vast storm drain system underneath Los Angeles, doomed to drown unless their ransom is paid on time, and only by the City of Los Angeles, to his off‐shore bank account. A freelance security agent named Abby Sinclair, who specializes in putting stalkers behind bars, often by extra‐legal means, has already had her hooks in the case for a while and is working for a woman who may have been targeted—and who does not trust the authorities to protect her. Since a rainstorm has already started, the time available to save a woman’s life is very brief—and there are already two dead victims to demonstrate the high cost of making mistakes or even just being too slow to act. Only by working together can the two investigators piece together the clues to help them figure out who (and maybe even how many people) the killer really is. Nail‐biting suspense, unexpected story twists, and surprise piled upon surprise all work together to deliver an irresistible read and an incredible page‐turner of a story.
