A basic problem in computer vision is to understand the structure of a real world scene given several images of it. Techniques for solving this problem are taken from projective geometry and photogrammetry. Here, the authors cover the geometric principles and their algebraic representation in terms of camera projection matrices, the fundamental matrix and the trifocal tensor. The theory and methods of computation of these entities are discussed with real examples, as is their use in the reconstruction of scenes from multiple images. The new edition features an extended introduction covering the key ideas in the book (which itself has been updated with additional examples and appendices) and significant new results which have appeared since the first edition. Comprehensive background material is provided, so readers familiar with linear algebra and basic numerical methods can understand the projective geometry and estimation algorithms presented, and implement the algorithms directly from the book.

Premiering in 1990 in Antibes, France, the European Conference on Computer Vision, ECCV, has been held biennially at venues all around Europe. These conferences have been very successful, making ECCV a major event to the computer vision community. ECCV 2002 was the seventh in the series. The privilege of organizing it was shared by three universities: The IT University of Copenhagen, the University of Copenhagen, and Lund University, with the conference venue in Copenhagen. These universities lie ̈ geographically close in the vivid Oresund region, which lies partly in Denmark and partly in Sweden, with the newly built bridge (opened summer 2000) crossing the sound that formerly divided the countries. We are very happy to report that this year’s conference attracted more papers than ever before, with around 600 submissions. Still, together with the conference board, we decided to keep the tradition of holding ECCV as a single track conference. Each paper was anonymously refereed by three different reviewers. For the nal selection, for the rst time for ECCV, a system with area chairs was used. These met with the program chairsinLundfortwodaysinFebruary2002toselectwhatbecame45oralpresentations and 181 posters.Also at this meeting the selection was made without knowledge of the authors’identity.

We are proud of the technical program we have put together and we hope you enjoy it. Interest in computer vision is increasing and ACCV 2006 attracted about 500 submission. The evaluation team consisted of 27 experts serving as Area Chairs and about 270 reviewers in all. The whole process was conducted electronically in a double-blind manner,a ?rstfor ACCV. Eachpaper wasassignedto an Area Chair who found three competent reviewers for it. We were able to contain the maximum load on the reviewers to nine and the average load to less than six. The review form had space for qualitative and quantitative evaluation of the paper on nine aspects. The submitted reviews underwent an elaborate process. First, they were seen by the Area Chair, who resolved divergences of opinion among reviewers, if any. The Area Chair then wrote qualitative comments and a quantitative score along with his/her initial recommendation on the paper. These were looked at by Program Co-chairs and compiled into a probables list. The Area Chairs and Program Co-chairs met in Beijing during ICCV to discuss this list and arrivedat the ?nal list of 64 oral papers and 128 posters. Naturally, many deserving papers could not be accommodated.

These twenty-three contributions focus on the most recent developments in the rapidly evolving field of geometric invariants and their application to computer vision. This work provides an introduction to the foundations of three-dimensional c- puter vision and describes recent contributions to the ?eld, which are of methodical and application-speci?c nature. Each chapter of this work provides an extensive overview of the corresponding state of the art, into which a detailed description of new methods or evaluation results in application-speci?c systems is embedded. Geometric approaches to three-dimensional scene reconstruction (cf. Chapter 1) are primarily based on the concept of bundle adjustment, which has been developed more than 100 years ago in the domain of photogrammetry. The three-dimensional scene structure and the intrinsic and extrinsic camera parameters are determined such that the Euclidean backprojection error in the image plane is minimised, u- ally relying on a nonlinear optimisation procedure. In the ?eld of computer vision, an alternative framework based on projective geometry has emerged during the last two decades, which allows to use linear algebra techniques for three-dimensional scene reconstructionand camera calibration purposes. With special emphasis on the problems of stereo image analysis and camera calibration, these fairly different - proaches are related to each other in the presented work, and their advantages and drawbacks are stated. In this context, various state-of-the-artcamera calibration and self-calibration methods as well as recent contributions towards automated camera calibration systems are described. An overview of classical and new feature-based, correlation-based, dense, and spatio-temporal methods for establishing point c- respondences between pairs of stereo images is given.
