Who was James Putnam? Answering that question may mean salvation for Alexander Rupert, a Minnesota detective whose life is in a serious downward spiral. A Medal of Valor winner, Alexander is now under subpoena by a grand jury on suspicion of corruption. He’s been reassigned to the Frauds Unit, where he is shunned by his fellow detectives, and he fears his status-seeking wife may be having an affair. When he happens across a complex case of identity theft, Alexander sees an opportunity to rehabilitate his tattered reputation. But the case explodes into far more than he could have expected, putting him in the path of trained assassin Drago Basta, a veteran of the Balkan wars who has been searching for “James Putnam” for years. As his life spins out of control, Alexander’s last hope may be his older brother, Max, a fellow police detective who steps in to try to save his brother from the carnage his investigation has let loose. The received view on the nature of legal authority contains the idea that a sound account of legitimate authority will explain how a legal authority has a right to command and the addressee a duty to obey. The received view fails to explain, however, how legal authority truly operates upon human beings as rational creatures with specific psychological makeups. This book takes a bottom-up approach, beginning at the microscopic level of agency and practical reason and leading to the justificatory framework of authority. The book argues that an understanding of the nature of legal normativity involves an understanding of the nature and structure of practical reason in the context of the law, and advances the idea that legal authority and normativity are intertwined. This point can be summarised thus: if we are able to understand both how the agent exercises his or her practical reason under legal directives and commands and how the agent engages his or her practical reason by following legal rules grounded on reasons for actions as good-making characteristics, then we can fully grasp the nature of legal authority and legal normativity. Using the philosophies of action enshrined in the works of Elisabeth Anscombe, Aristotle and Thomas Aquinas, the study explains practical reason as diachronic future-directed intention in action and argues that this conception illuminates the structure of practical reason of the legal rules' addressees. The account is comprehensive and enables us to distinguish authoritative and normative legal rules in just and good legal systems from 'apparent' authoritative and normative legal rules of evil legal systems. At the heart of the book is the methodological view of a 'practical turn' to elucidate the nature of legal normativity and authority.

It Seeks To Understand The Incarnated Divinity Of Chaitanya (1486Å1533) And The Socio-Religious And Psychological Factors Responsible For His Apotheosis During His Life-Time. The Study Also Shows How The Concept Of Avatèra, Though Un-Vedic In Origin, Has Absorbed Many Vedic Elements Of Solar Myth And Natural Allegory, Has Synthesized Various Elements From The Epico-Purè!Ic Tradition And Has Ultimately Blossomed Forth As An Eclectic Theory In The Bengal School Of Vai !Avism. It Further Shows That Both Vai !Avism And The Concept Of Avatèra Owe Their Origin To K !A Vèsudeva, The Great Synthesizer Of The Aryan And Non-Aryan Cultures In Ancient India And Ascribes The Theoretical Development Of The Concept Of Avatèra In The Medieval Period To Various Attempts Of Interpreting Chaitanya S Life And Personality. In This Study, Avatèravèda Does Not Merely Remain To Be A Theological Doctrine, But Turns Out, On In-Depth Scrutiny, To Be Also A Method Of Analysis And Interpretation Of Both History And Its Maker With Stress On Synthesis And Syncretism. The Study Dwells Upon Many Relevant Topics Like Relationship Between Avatèravèda And Vyêhavèda, Psychosomatic Symptoms Of Avatèrahood, Zoomorphism And Mythic Elements In The Stories Of The Ten Incarnations Of Vi !U, Historical Significance Of The Episode Of Kalki And Chronology Of The Mytho-Historic Avatèras With The Help Of The Purè!Ic Calendar Of The Four Ages.

Tending to the Holy: The Practice of the Presence of God in Ministry invites pastors to embody their deepest beliefs in the routine and surprising tasks of ministry. Inspired by Brother Lawrence's classic text in spirituality, Tending to the Holy integrates the wisdom and practices of the Christian spiritual tradition with the commonplace practices of pastoral ministry. Bruce and Katherine Epperly utilize a variety of spiritual disciplines especially Benedictine, Celtic, Ignatian, Rhineland, and process spiritualities to provide a framework for helping clergy nurture the awareness of God, creative imagination, and personal well-being in every aspect of their ministerial lives. Practicing God's presence in the ordinary tasks of ministry inspires wholeness, spiritual transformation, vision, imagination, endurance, and healthy self-differentiation in ministry. Commitment to joining spiritual practices with the routine and repetitive tasks of ministry provides an important antidote to unhealthy stress, burnout, and loss of vision in ministry. By seeing their congregational leadership in terms of spiritual transformation, imaginative practice, and relational interdependence, ordinary ministerial practices can become ways pastors can deepen their relationship with God. Growing out of their work with pastors at every season of ministry, as well as combined ministerial experience of nearly sixty years, Bruce and Katherine Epperly invite pastoral leaders to complement and expand on their understanding of spiritual leadership, pastoral excellence, and self-care, integrating traditional and contemporary spiritual practices with the concrete arts of ministry.
