How I Got This Way chronicles the true story of growing up in the 1950s on a primitive farm. With very little knowledge of his own ancestors history, the author was inspired to record his own life history so that future generations of his family would understand How I Got This Way. He also felt that it was important to preserve a record of what it was like to grow up in a rural primitive farm setting so that a unique and important time in American history would not be lost forever. The lessons he learned throughout his childhood infl uenced the man he became through his years in the Navy and later as a Telephone Man. While some may feel that the farm life experienced was cruel and unforgiving, he would say that it taught him the values of hard work, responsibility, and a sense of ethics that provided great strength of character that served him well throughout his life. His story telling is mixed with humor and honesty as it uniquely describes his childhood experiences through the tender perspective of a child. It is the story of overcoming and loving life amid sometimes great diffi culties and trials. How I Got This Way is a poignant story of a life that few will have the opportunity to experience in the future.

Michael Calvert was one of the legendary figures of the Second World War. He hit the headlines as 'Mad Mike' after the first Chindit campaign in 1943, with a reputation as a tough and daring leader of guerrilla troops. He was one of the first men selected for the Chindits by the controversial General Orde Wingate. He became Wingate's right-hand man - both in fierce jungle fighting and in battles against stick-in-the-mud staff officers. His speciality was penetrating behind enemy lines. Mad Mike fought in the snow and ice of Norway, in the steaming jungles of Burma, and on the battlefields of Europe where in 1945 he commanded the crack Special Air Service Brigade.

European markets almost exclusively relied on Caribbean sugar produced by slave labor until abolitionist campaigns began around 1800. Thereafter, importing Asian sugar and transferring plantation production to Asia became a serious option for the Western world. In this book, Ulbe Bosma details how the British and Dutch introduced the sugar plantation model in Asia and refashioned it over time. Although initial attempts by British planters in India failed, the Dutch colonial administration was far more successful in Java, where it introduced in 1830 a system of forced cultivation that tied local peasant production to industrial manufacturing. A century later, India adopted the Java model in combination with farmers' cooperatives rather than employing coercive measures. Cooperatives did not prevent industrial sugar production from exploiting small farmers and cane cutters, however, and Bosma finds that much of modern sugar production in Asia resembles the abuses of labor by the old plantation systems of the Caribbean.

This is a book about the industrialisation of the manufacture of sugar - by that date a key global commodity - on a 'remote' colonial frontier in the middle decades of the nineteenth century. Between the 1830s and the 1880s the Indonesian island of Java, then part of the Dutch colonial empire, drew away from all its erstwhile Asian counterparts to become the 'Oriental Cuba'.While the Caribbean island held the position (which it took over from Brazil c.1850) of the world's second largest supplier of cane sugar to international commodity markets, 'Dutch' Java emerged from almost now-where to take second place. The island had begun the nineteenth century as one of a number of centres - in fact, a rather minor one - of pre-industrial sugar production located in tropical and sub-tropical Asia from the Indian sub-continent through to the southernmost islands of Japan. It ended the century not only as by far the largest of Asia's producer-exporters of sugar but also - critically - as the sole example of the sustained and successful large-scale industrialisation of sugar manufacture anywhere in 'the East'. This book sets out to explain how and why this happened - and what its implications were for the long-term trajectory of the Java sugar industry in the international sugar economy.
